The study "The Reality of the Beekeeping Sector and its Derivatives in the West Bank", prepared by the Palestinian Businesswomen's Association – Asala, provides a vision of the reality and future of the sector through which it believes that a good opportunity can be seen to flourish if the existing gaps are focused on, with the aim of focusing on obtaining honey with excellent quality, increasing the number of hives and queen bees’ production, and focusing on beeswax as one of the main derivatives that can be invested in to provide decent economic outcome and revenue, in addition to derivatives such as pollen, propolis, and Royal Jelly and the idea of developing a new therapeutic sector based on bee venom, the study also includes a regional mapping of Bee sector policies.
The study was prepared within the framework of the project "Mediterranean Bee Hubs in support for sustainable economic prosperity in deprived rural areas" - MedBEESinessHubs, was carried out by researcher Abdulaziz Al-Salhi and consultant Ayed Abdulaziz, aims to draw clear features on the beekeeping sector in the West Bank, taking into account the characteristics related to the beekeeping sector in the West Bank and its relationship to biodiversity, the beekeepers’ sector in terms of number and the volume of productivity in this sector, as well as the productive derivatives of the sector that can be focused on and developed.
The study reveals a set of problems and challenges facing this sector, which can be summarized in issues such as access to markets, lack of awareness among beekeepers regarding biodiversity, in addition to the lack of laboratories and tests, which are major factors in weakening this sector. Additionally, the lack of coordination between responsible figures on the one hand, and beekeepers on the other. The study also focuses on the risks surrounding the beekeeping sector in the West Bank, and how to connect the Beekeeping sector with the tourism sector in the West Bank.
The study presents a set of recommendations that focus on policymakers in the West Bank, and recommendations regarding opportunities to integrate the beekeeping sector to be cross-sectoral between the strategies of the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture, the Environmental Quality Authority, the Ministry of Economy, and the Ministry of Tourism. The recommendations also discuss the need to revive the Palestinian Bee Council and focus on a marketing mechanism that ensures the marketing of all derivatives of the sector, not just honey.
