The Palestinian Businesswomen’s Association – Asala, the Palestinian partner in the project “Mediterranean Bee Hubs in support for sustainable economic prosperity in deprived rural areas - MedBEESinessHubs”, launched a call for applications to a honeybee-related subgrant for women and youth.
The subgrants, which amount up to 264,700 Euros in the five partner countries which are Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Italy, aim to grant people who are interested in the honeybee sector the chance to start their own projects in order to contribute to the revival and activation of the sector in the Mediterranean region and enhance the economy through the concept of the “bee economy”, especially in rural and marginalized areas.
MedBEESinessHubs aims to empower local communities in partner Mediterranean countries, and this comes through capacity-building activities in the fields of business management and handicrafts. Through microfinancing, the project supports the building and development of MSMEs that work in the honeybee sector.
Work on developing the honeybee sector as an economic activity in the targeted area will be implemented as a tool for economic growth within the framework of the concept of cooperation, which is essential for the support of private enterprises, as well as the impact of the concept of cooperation on the sustainability level. The final goal of the project is the formation of Mediterranean Bee Hubs, which consist of five clusters of bee-related companies, which aim to create individual job opportunities, grow regional tourism, and reverse regional isolation and the lack of a sustainable destination.
Merna Ziadeh, Program Manager at Asala, emphasized that this opportunity is considered a step forward toward the development of the bee sector, which is essential in Palestine, pointing out that this step comes as a compliment to Asala’s path of achieving economic empowerment of Palestinian women through building their technical and financial capacity in the sectors they work in.
It is worth noting that Asala has, under the framework of this project, implemented training courses that provided the beneficiaries with the required skills to produce beeswax products in a correct manner, as well as skills in financial business management and important marketing skills to promote their products.
